Reflective listening begins with an interest in what the client has to say and a desire to truly understand how the client thinks. Every person wants to be heard and understood, and one simple way to demonstrate that the therapist is really hearing the client is to reflect. Novices using motivational interviewing often get trapped in what becomes an interrogation of the client, asking question after question with little or no reflection.įollow the guide below to listen effectively with an individual you are working with who is hoping to achieve a behaviour change: Answer (1 of 3): Although both have similar characteristics ,i feel that there is a small difference. Reflective listening is trying to understand the message as the speaker intends to deliver ,without ambiguity ,misunderstanding, or misinterpretation. Listen carefully with a goal of understanding the dilemma.ġ. ‘What makes you want to make this change?’Ģ. ‘How might you go about doing this in order to be successful?’ģ. ‘What are the three best reasons for you to do this?’Ĥ. Reflection- what was it like for you as the listener? What did you notice about your thoughts? Were you tempted to provide advice or education? What did you think/feel being in a position where you did not advise? What may your key learnings be from this activity?
